We’ve all been there: that awkward moment when you realize that your makeup is totally outdated (or you just need to freshen your collection up a bit) but you have NO idea where to start. Makeup can definitely be an investment but I whole heartedly believe that with the right products you can build a worthwhile makeup collection without totally breaking the bank. The key is to invest in essential makeup products that work and that will work well. Are you overwhelmed with all the options on the market these days? Don’t worry – I’ve put together a list of makeup bag essentials that will have you looking fabulous and ready to go in no time!
NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base: It holds on to eyeshadow so well and I easily get all day wear from my eye makeup when I wear this. It’s great for gals with oily lids as well as those of us who have dry skin. A little goes a long way, too, so each tube lasts forever!
The NARSissist Eyeshadow Palette (Limited Edition): What’s better than an entire eyeshadow palette full of wearable colors at your disposal? Oh right, nothing! This Limited Edition NARS palette contains everything you need to build an amazing makeup kit. If you’re building your kit from the ground up a palette like this is perfect to get the most bang for your buck since you’ll get a ton of variety while taking up very little space.
Urban Decay NAKED Palettes (3 Varieties): The Urban Decay NAKED palettes have a cult following and for good reason – their shadows are buttery, pigmented, and super easy to use. They have three varieties to choose from – a warm palette, a cool palette, and a rose toned palette and each of them are gorgeous!
Inglot Gel Eyeliner: The Inglot Gel Eyeliner comes in a ton of different colors and has a really smooth, easy to use texture. I definitely recommend it!
NARS Larger than Life Long Wear Eyeliner: If you prefer a pencil eyeliner you can’t go wrong with the NARS Larger than Life pencils. They have an incredibly smooth texture which makes them glide on with ease and they last all day without smudging, sliding, or fading. They’re great for the waterline, too!
Milani “Easy Brow” Automatic Eyebrow Pencil:. It’s super easy to use, very natural looking, and is just an all around solid product. It is double ended with the product on one end and a brow brush on the other so it’s really everything you need to get the perfect brow.
L’Oreal Butterfly Mascara: This mascara is super unique. The butterfly brush helps to get each individual lash (even the little guys in the outer corners!) which delivers awesome volume without ever getting clumpy or thick.
Physician’s Formula Organic Wear CC Cream: I am amazed at the amazing coverage it gives from it. It also gives an absolutely gorgeous, dewy finish that looks like skin without ever looking heavy or cakey. It’s an amazing product!
bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation: . Whether you are covering blemishes or just canceling out a bit of redness this easy to use foundation will give you flawless coverage that lasts all day. Even though it’s a powder product it never looks powdery or heavy but instead just melts right into the skin to give a second-skin finish.
Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder: I’m just going to come right out and say it – this is an awesome dupe for MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural. It gives a slight bit of coverage while keeping my face oil free, matte, and perfect throughout the day. It’s perfect for setting cream or liquid products and is a definitely a holy grail product.
Hourglass Hidden Corrective Concealer: I picked this concealer to include as a makeup bag essential because it can be used in a few different ways. It’s creamy enough to be used under the eye without creasing, is great at concealing redness around the nose or mouth, and is heavy duty enough to be used to cover blemishes and other discoloration. A lot of other concealer products are good for one, maybe two, of these areas so you really get more bang for your buck with the Hourglass concealer because you can literally use it for everything.
NYX Cosmetics Powder Blush: You really can’t go wrong with NYX products – they’re affordable, high quality, and they have a ton of options to fit everyone’s needs. Their powder blush is known for being pigmented with a high variety of colors which means that you can find your perfect shade (or two!) and not break the bank while finding a great product that works.
NYX Cosmetics Matte Body Bronzer: For contouring you really can’t go wrong when you reach for a matte bronzer. It can really help to shape the face and add appropriate shadows which allow you to bring out your best features. The NYX Matte Body Bronzer is pigmented and doesn’t have any shimmer so you’ll never walk around looking like a disco ball.
Physician’s Formula Mineral Glow Pearls (Translucent Pearl): I absolutely LOVE this highlighter because it gives a gorgeous finish that can be used all over the face for an ultra dewy look or just on the cheekbones for a subtle highlight. It’s not glittery or overly shiny but instead just gives a really soft, wearable glow that is really easy to control. If you’re new to highlighting this is a great option!
NYX Slim Lip Pencil: This lip liner by NYX is a total rockstar! It comes in a huge variety of colors so you can definitely build up a great collection without breaking the bank. I’m obsessed!
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick: I LOVE me some drugstore lipstick and Revlon is one of my favorites. They have a variety of finishes and colors so there really is something for everyone!
Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick: I have always been really impressed with the variety of colors that Maybelline provides as part of its Color Sensational lipstick line! They really truly do offer something for everyone and, this might sound nerdy, but I love that they color coordinate their packaging with the shade of lipstick. It makes getting ready so much easier!
